 On June 19th, 2008, we released the second issue of our course Software Project Management Fundamentals. This time it was a real success – the training hall was full and we lacked enough chairs.

This time there was a big interest in project management theory and practices not only among software development companies but also among companies providing internet services, media companies, and even construction companies! We were very flattered at such interest.

We had participants from: Vereo, Kontrax, TranSoft, Intersoft, Mail.bg, A.C.T.A., Omegasoft, PAC Doverie, Vestitel.bg, Makler96, Bulgarian Software Technologies, Anabella Projects, as well as one individual – George Georgiev. We thank them all for being with us!

The growing interest and the active participation of the students in the discussions shows us that we are on the right path. The management of software projects is still mistery for many professionals and sharing our knowledge and experience is the way to a better understanding of the project management principles and to bringing our projects to a successful end.

The first software project management course, organized by RammSoft took part on March 13, 2008. We are very happy that the people who came to this event were real professionals – senior developers and project managers with solid practical experience, looking for answers to the questions they face in their daily work and for ways to improve, to be more effective, and to bring their projects to success.

We had participants from Bankservice, (a group of four people!), Nemetschek Bulgaria, AG Capital, VMWare, Vereo, Land Data Center, Nextborn, Weiss Profil and Consult.bg. We are extremely grateful to the colleagues of Bankservice. Apparently, the company takes the issue of the professional development and education of their employees very seriously, which is a sign of professional maturity.

The lectures were welcomed with interest, the participants had their comments and questions and showed that the topics were important to them. They have encountered serious problems in their work that they wanted to find solutions. The conversations continued during the coffee breaks. There were spontaneous discussions where the participants shared examples of their work and tried to help each other.

We believe that providing professional education to people developing software products has its potential and more companies will realize the need of such education to improve the professional qualification of their employees, which, in result, will lead to more successfully completed projects.

Although our hosts provided us with a room transformed from a tavern (“mehana” in Bulgarian) to a lecture hall we succeeded in creating a comfortable atmosphere and didn’t pay much attention to the dark walls and the traditional tapestries which were the only decoration in the hall.

The main lecturer Mihail Mihaylov (Mike Ramm) of RammSoft was warmly welcomed and he presented a lot of theoretical information, practical tips, and real-life examples of good and bad practices of software project management.

His unique presenting style and attractive stage performance made the audience real fans of his.

The second lecturer – Maya Mihaylova of Vereo did her first public performance as a professional speaker but she did well. Her personal experience of being a woman leading software developers was the most intriguing part of her presentations.

There was a hot discussion after each presentation. Both lecturers tried to answer the participants’ questions and to provoke their creativity in seeking the right answers by themselves.

Sometimes the discussions couldn’t end within the planned time and they continued outside the hall during the coffee breaks.

The last day the course finished with a practical exercise with MS Project in the NASD‘s (the organizer’s) lab in Varna.

The course was very intensive and everyone got tired. A lot of information passed along and a lot of discussions were made. Nevertheless, all the participants were happy to learn something new and useful in their jobs and we went home satisfied for being able to help them do their jobs better.

We believe that this tradition will continue and we’ll be able to establish a strong and devoted community of professional software project managers.
